This award-winning virtuoso partnership of “one of the UK’s greatest guitarists” (BBC Radio 2) with “the doyenne of Irish harpers” (Scotland on Sunday) has toured in twenty-three countries to venues ranging from the tiniest of village halls and historic European churches to palaces in Kyoto and Istanbul. They've been described as “the high-wire act in traditional music” (The Irish Times). Máire Ní Chathasaigh (Pr. “Moira Nee HA-ha-sig”) may well be the most influential, interesting, and original player of the Irish harp; she also composes, sings, and plays tin whistle and piano. Chris Newman is one of the UK’s finest flatpicking guitarists; he is also a prolific composer, arranger, and humorist. Together, they perform a breathtaking blend of traditional Irish music, hot jazz, bluegrass, and baroque, along with striking new compositions and subversive humor.

Hailing from Vermont and Québec, they offer music rooted in the traditional dance repertoire of Northwestern Europe. The three are masters of the piano accordion, the quieter, bellows-blown bagpipes, and fiddle and nykelharpa, together creating a beguiling and orchestral blend which utterly subverts the common stereotypes of their Old World instruments. Their repertoire includes bourrées from central France, triple-time hornpipes from the Scottish Borders, the Swedish slängpolska, the Breton hanter dro, and compelling originals reflecting these influences. Unified by their zeal and musical craftsmanship, their performances are also punctuated with engaging commentary on the music and instruments.

Jeremiah McLane (accordion, piano, vocals), Andrew VanNorstrand (guitar, vocals, fiddle) and Eric Boodman (fiddle, feet, vocals) present an evening of traditional songs and tunes from North America and the British isles as well as original compositions.  Andrew blends traditional folk, old-time, country western swing with a deep appreciation of indie-roots-Americana, and has performed on festival stages, concert halls, dance floors and living rooms all over North America and beyond. Eric’s intricate fiddling, singing, and foot percussion has been a joyful presence on the New England traditional music scene since 2015. In 2016, Montpelier Times-Argus music critic Art Edelstein named Jeremiah Vermont’s musician of the year, citing his contributions in teaching, recording and performing is his various configurations.

More about the trio:
Eric Boodman fell in love with Québécois fiddle music while growing up in Montreal. He's delved into its history as a journalist and essayist for publications like The New York Times Magazine, and has brought his intricate fiddling, singing, and foot percussion to concert halls and dances on both sides of the Atlantic. Since 2015, he's been a joyful presence on the New England traditional music scene, playing with the party-band Calico and the Scandinavian-influenced trio Triga, among others. His energy is infectious: in his interpretation, you can't help but feel the beauty of these old songs and crooked tunes.

Accordionist/pianist Jeremiah McLane has a diverse musical background including blues, jazz, Celtic, Québécois, French, Scandinavian and other roots influenced music. He has served on the faculties of the State University of New York in Plattsburgh, NY, the Summit School for Traditional Music in Montpelier, VT, and currently teaches at the Upper Valley Music Center in Lebanon, NH. He teaches regularly at summer music programs throughout the United States including Ashokan, Centrum’s American Festival of Fiddle Tunes, Swananoah, Maine Fiddle Camp, Lark in the Morning, John C. Campbell Folk School, and the Pinewoods Camp. He is the founder and director of the Floating Bridge Music School, and since 1990 he has released over thirty-five recordings. In 2016, Montpelier Times-Argus music critic Art Edelstein named Jeremiah Vermont’s musician of the year, citing his contributions in teaching, recording and performing is his various configurations. Jeremiah tours regularly with Kalos and Triton as well as performing with his wife Annemieke McLane, in Cassotto Duo.

Andrew VanNorstrand, singer, songwriter, has has performed on festival stages, concert halls, dance floors and living rooms all over North America and beyond. For eighteen years he toured and recorded with the popular dance band Great Bear and is now often on the road with the folk/roots quartet The Faux Paws.  Andrew’s debut solo album That We Could Find A Way To Be highlights the complicated intersections of love, faith, loss and uncertainty.  From the rust belt to the Blue Ridge, cold spring in New England to a summer's night in Charlottesville; his original songs seek out beauty in the search and struggle for understanding.  Andrew blends traditional folk, old-time, country and western swing with a deep appreciation of indie-roots-Americana and artists like Jeff Tweedy, Richard Thompson, Gillian Welch, Sufjan Stevens and Townes Van Zandt.

Driftwood Soldier isn't your average mandolin-bass foot-stomping gutter-folk duo. Growling and crooning, muttering about lost love, brimstone, and the glorious view from the underside of a rusty world order, Owen holds the rhythm on mandolin and foot percussion. To his left, Bobby stretches bass notes into lyrical vines that vibrate somewhere north of your liver and flower unexpectedly at night. This is the kind of roots music that grows through the cracks in a West Philly sidewalk and drinks its rainwater laced with motor oil.
Their second full-length album, Stay Ahead of the Wolf, arrived late in 2019. It was produced with Erin McKeown and mixed by Grammy winner Ted Hutt. Unfazed by a world in disarray, Stay Ahead of the Wolf crawled up onto its four legs and went barrelling through the digital ether, carrying with it this strange beast’s howl.

Known for her powerhouse voice and “fiery, vulnerable songs,” Sarah King creates thought-provoking, versatile Americana music. Her genuine stories about real-life emotions and situations also draw on classic folk-blues themes, balancing songs about the devil and booze with hard-won moments of reflection and acceptance. Her acclaimed 2021 EP The Hour, produced by Simone Felice and David Baron, earned her recognition as the New England Music Awards Songwriter of the Year and performances at the 2022 Folk Alliance International and Philadelphia Folk festivals, as well as supporting slots for acts including Blues Traveler and The Steel Woods. For her follow-up to The Hour, King is once again taking risks—this time moving beyond the darkness and introspection that informed her debut solo EP to create a sound echoing the vibrancy of her high-spirited live show. Equally at home in intimate, acoustic listening rooms or with her full band in big rock clubs, she delivers moments of light and darkness, angels and devils, badassery and brokenness, taking listeners on an energetic and sometimes emotional journey through stories of American life. Fans of Chris Stapleton, Elle King, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Alabama Shakes will recognize a kindred spirit in Sarah King.

Orkney (Scotland) born fiddler Louise Bichan and Indiana (USA) mandolinist Ethan Setiawan present a collaboration and meeting of their musical worlds in Hildaland. A path steeped in the fiddle traditions of their respective sides of the Atlantic, the journey taken wends through Scottish, oldtime, and Swedish inspired music intertwined with contemporary compositions. Bichan’s fiddle is a melodic foil to Setiawan’s counterpoint and harmonic depth, and the two weave in and out seamlessly.

Setiawan has won such accolades as the 2014 National Mandolin Championship, the 2017 RockyGrass Mandolin Championship and has shared the stage with the likes of Julian Lage, Darrell Scott, Bryan Sutton, Mike Marshall, Tony Trischka, Darol Anger, Casey Driessen, the Steel Wheels, Don Stiernberg, Matt Flinner, and Jacob Jolliff.

Bichan has won awards for her compositions and playing, and has travelled far and wide to perform in various line ups since a young age. She has appeared at the likes of the BBC TV's Hogmanay Live show, Edinburgh Castle, Reading Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, Lorient Interceltique Festival, Milwaukee Irish Festival and Sligo Live festival. In 2016 she released her first solo album, Out of My Own Light, to great acclaim.

Original and traditional folk / roots music from Vermont musicians Andrew VanNorstrand and Rachel Bell.

Andrew and Rachel have been performing together in many different configurations for nearly twenty years! Their shared repertoire has a lot of Celtic and French influences as well as dance music from New England and Quebec. Their early musical work together inspired much of the foundation of each of their careers. Although they are frequently busy with a wide range of collaborators (The Faux Paws, Eloise & Co, Alchemy, The Rear Defrosters just to name a few), their paths always manage to converge now and then, and their shared ideas about rhythms and textures and musicality always seem to be there waiting for them. They both love to dig in on tunes with energetic drive, but they also embrace beautiful melodies that have lots of space and sweetness. Andrew and Rachel have a particular fondness for the balancing act between interesting, intricate arrangements and wildly free improvisation. They enjoy building rich instrumental arrangements around songs as well as pulling diverse repertoire into coherent set lists. In a brilliant stroke of luck (ok, it wasn’t luck so much as years of plotting and planning), they now live just a little over a half hours’ drive from each other, which has given them a whole new opportunity for musical exploration. They’ve been developing their duo material over the past year or so, and are excited to share it.

The music of New England, Quebec, and the British Isles layered with rich three-fiddle harmony, played by Rose Jackson, Rebecca Rose Weiss, and Willy Clemetson.

Three fiddles is three times the fun, right? Something magical happened one July evening when Willy, Rebecca, and Rose found themselves in a barn in Montague, Massachusetts and discovered a shared love of harmony and New England tunes new and old. They swore they’d find a way to make it happen again, and now, here they are to share the magic with you.

Rose Jackson discovered contra dance music at the age many kids discover the Beatles. As an aspiring dance musician, she was lucky enough to study with fiddler Becky Tracy, and later learned a thing or two about song and arrangement from Pete Sutherland through Young Tradition Vermont. She toured nationally with the contra dance band Polaris, and lately has been playing gigs across New England with a rotating cast of musicians she admires. She knows the cool hip new tunes, but she’d rather play the old ones, thanks all the same.

Rebecca Rose Weiss eagerly learns from elder musicians about community music and the old days and tunes, most recently as mentee of David Kaynor, legendary New England dance caller and musician. Her first contra dance band tour involved being adopted by the Polka Pants Band (Andrea Hoag, David Kaynor, Charlie Pilzer) for a road trip around the country wearing poofy pants. Lately, she has been following around a variety of other New Englanders in hopes of absorbing not only rock solid rhythm but also winter driving tips. She gets especially excited about harmonizing, teaching, and composing. https://www.rebeccaroseweiss.com

Willy Clemetson is a fiddler and song-crafter with a passion for living traditional music. He grew up learning fiddle and singing in Belfast, Maine and has since toured with a variety of projects, including the choral group Northern Harmony and the band Spintuition. Living in one of the hidden stashes of incredible folk music in Maine, he has developed a love of playing and a deep gratitude for the genuine connection and community that music inspires.

Andy Davis sings original songs and Martha Burns sing traditional songs at Rebop Farm in West Brattleboro. With guitar and accordion - and perhaps a special guest or two - the evening will be an adventure in both traditional song and new songs written in traditional style. Each song is a bit of history, a story and a remembrance. Suggested donation $10-20, sliding scale.

Andy Davis taught elementary music in Brattleboro, Dover and other area towns for over 30 years. Calling community dances and playing banjo, piano and accordion has kept him in touch with traditional music and its place in community life. In retirement Andy has focussed on songwriting. His songs speak of life in New England, interesting characters, dear friends, philosophical musings and an occasional political or environmental commentary. Mixed in with his original songs will be some original waltzes, jigs and reels - all with a story or memory to relate.

Martha Burns sings old-time American folk songs the old-time way. Heart songs, cowboy songs, tragic ballads, and comic ditties. Songs from the mountains and songs from the range. Songs from the earliest period of recorded country music and songs never sung in a studio. Her haunting voice is perfectly suited to her old-time repertoire. An accomplished guitarist, Martha’s accompaniments bring out the pith in a song. She has been singing and playing American folk music since Hoover was in the White House—well, almost—and has performed throughout North America and abroad.

The Corn Potato Duo earns high praise in traditional American music, keeping old time fiddle and banjo music from a one-way trip to the dustbins of history. Theirs is a story of struggle, hard knocks and triumph. Essentially unable to cope with modern life, the members of this band are outcasts of society who survive by playing the lost music of the flatlands where they were raised.

The Corn Potatoes have delighted audiences with their driving fiddle tunes and harmonious singing across the US, Canada, Europe, Mexico, and India. They are multi-instrumentalists dedicated to continuing the music and dance traditions of the Central and Southern US. In addition to being champion fiddlers they play banjo, guitar, bass and mandolin and deftly handle many different antiquated styles including ballads, "ho-downs," country "rags" and southern gospel, specializing in twin fiddling and double banjo tunes.

Aaron Jonah Lewis is a multi-instrumentalist, performer and educator. He has won awards at the Clifftop Appalachian String Band Festival, including First Place Neotraditional Band in 2008, and at the Galax Old Fiddlers Convention, including First Place Bluegrass Fiddle in 2007, and he has performed at major festivals from the US to the UK and from Italy to Finland. Lewis has appeared on dozens of recordings from bluegrass and old time to swing jazz, modern experimental and Turkish classical music projects. He has taught workshops at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and at the English Folk Dance and Song Society in London. He also plays and teaches banjo, mandolin, guitar, and bass and is currently based in Detroit, Michigan.

Ben Belcher is an accomplished banjo player and a talented artist. He has distinguished himself with such awards as the Independent Music World Series, which he won with The Hot Seats in Nashville, TN, in 2006, First Place Neotraditional Band at the Appalachian String Band Festival in 2008 and a Herald Angel award at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe. Belcher has toured extensively in the US and in Europe and the UK since 2001. He has been a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe with The Hot Seats and recently appeared at the Shetland Folk Festival. He also plays guitar and fiddle.

The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell or piece of mischief and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship. Swirling border pipes, raging fiddle, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. Echoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk, metal, bluegrass, swing, and even klezmer. Originally formed as a quartet, Cantrip sprung from a local session in Edinburgh nearly twenty years ago. Their driving music immediately caught the attention of the masses, and they were quickly signed to the Foot Stompin' label. With their first album "Silver" (2001) in hand, Cantrip made its way across the water to the United States, where they were received with roars and shouts (of enjoyment). After years of significant touring, the band parted ways with Foot Stompin' and began producing albums on their own. Two albums later ("Boneshaker" in 2005 and "Piping the Fish" in 2008), Cantrip had cemented itself as a perennial figure. After a period of hiatus in which children were born and continents were left for new ones, Cantrip redefined its sound. Trimming itself to a trio, the band tightened its arrangements while expanding its influence. New inspirations began creeping into the sound, complementing the traditional foundation of the band. This more mature sound debuted on "The Crossing" (2016), to high acclaim. In 2019, the band gathered 50 of its closest friends and fans and returned to its roots, re-recording Silver in a live format (Cantrip Live), re-arranged yet with a more youthful sound than the original. The process inspired a new approach for the band, which they implemented for their upcoming fifth studio album "Undark". In late 2019, they spent a week in their original home of Edinburgh creating and recording new music. All of the tracks on this album were captured live in one take by engineer and longtime friend of the band Reuben Taylor. This seminal album, slated to be released in Fall 2020, shows a new and darker side of the group while preserving the elements that audiences have come to know and love. After 20 years of touring, Cantrip has found a character like no other. Dan Houghton, Jon Bews and Eric McDonald stir the elements in a witches' cauldron, slowly coalescing into chaotic order.
